Now, in addition to that, the Salute to Seasons committee under the paid leadership of Clair Lang got the Lower Park Avenue Association together and some insurance companies and banks gave the money to put the trees and the tubs down the center of lower Park Avenue, from approximately 34th Street to 16th Street. It's really very attractive now; the trees are growing and there's ivy, and there are begonias in the tubs, and it makes that really ugly, very ugly street, look more bearable, I think.

Well, this is city improvement and we're still far from having done what we want: all buildings of any consequence lighted at right, fountains up and down Park Avenue and in the park and in front of the Metropolitan Museum. Delacorte has actually given fountains for the front of the Museum. Delacorte's efforts have been separate from ours, but we hope to bring him into this effort.

How much time do you spend on this activity?

Lasker:

Oh, not a terrible lot. I really consider it wrong to spend too much time on this because the other things make so much more difference. But Mrs. Lang, whom I pay, and Mrs. Ruth Mayer spend quite a lot of time. And the City has given some money to do the salute evenings, in the spring and all, and they're really terribly amusing, and I beg you to come with me one night. Sometimes we have Cab Calloway singing “Minnie the Moocher,” with the people singing along. This fall we had Carol Channing singing “Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend,” and throwing “diamonds,” and
