The person that wants to help me is Tip O'Neill, and on the 28th of April he invited the whole House Sub-Committee to a luncheon at my request, and for which I paid, but that is nothing. I'm thrilled to pay for it. He invited them, and I think most of them came. And we had Gutterman and Dr. Isador Rosenfeld, Gutterman speaking for cancer and Isador Rosenfeld for heart appropriations. And Hunt [Dr. Hunt] of Mayo speaking for heart, for high blood pressure.

After they had spoken in very mild and, you know, doctorly tones, Obey opened up an attack on the whole thing, and said, why are you, Mrs. Lasker, only interested in lobbying for cancer? Well, I had to say to him that I'd lobbied for many years for all the Institutes, and all the Institutes needed more money, but now, fortunately, there were other people who were lobbying for other Institutes and that I was really concentrating on cancer and heart. And I said I thought the other people were doing very well for the other Institutes in their lobbying, and he said, “oh, that's not so, they're very politicaly inexperienced compared with you, and that's ridiculous.”
