Lasker:

Well, Pepper was my first friend in Congress in the 40's.

Q:

I know he was, when he was in the Senate. So I'm asking this question now: what role did you play in getting some of these witnesses to appear before the committee?

Lasker:

Well, we made up a list of who should appear, and he wrote a letter asking them.

Q:

You say “we” did?

Lasker:

Deeda Blair and I (with advice of Dr. Vincent T. DeVita of the Cancer Institute, whom we asked out of courtesy). We knew all the people that were really the central figures in it.

Q:

I see. This is what I --

Lasker:

-- Jordan Gutterman added to it a little bit. But we don't need any help. We know this subject -- you know? And Pepper believes us. And he has a right to.

Q:

Well, this is what I wanted to draw out.

Lasker:

It's not hard to work with him because he's not surprised that we know it.
