Q:

They'd better give you an, honorary citizenship in the District of Columbia.

Lasker:

Well, I think people are very agreeable about it in Washington, and are very gracious about saying that they enjoy what's been done. But a great deal's been done by the Park Service, In the way of planting of tulips and annuals. Even Spiegel, the mail order house, has given a marvelous planting of dogwoods around the Post Office Building. They're a mail order house, so they're interested in the post office! This will make a very spectacular flowering in the spring.

700 of the 3800 trees have been planted by the government of Japan around part of the Washington Monument. Well, quite a few things have been done. The main thing is that about 35 states have held conferences on natural beauty, and a large number of cities, including the state of New York and the state of California.

Is it your anticipation that by taking these steps in Washington itself --

Lasker:

Mrs. Johnson feels that we should make a model of Washington, and that this will inspire people in other places, and I think that she's right. You do have to have some place that's a model. And in a way it's quite hard, and in other ways it's
