Lasker:

They have a drug company called Toray which is making it. They are now making Cantell type interferon, and I know that it has been cloned, and whether they are making cloned material or not I don't know.

Q:

Do they exchange their information with people here?

Lasker:

They publish in rare places, sometimes, in some obscure journal, and it's very important to find out what they have done, because they are very clever, the Japanese -- they are extremely clever.

Q:

Now what group is coordinating all this?

Lasker:

No group is coordinating, because this is already in the hands of industry, and naturally industry doesn't want to be coordinated. But there is going to be a conference in Brighton with many researchers telling earch other what they are doing, but they are mostly people (tape defective)

Q:

Is that Brighton, England?

Lasker:

Brighton, England, but they are mostly people that are academics, they are friendly with people in industry. But there is no real coordination, and the National Cancer Institute really hasn't . . . they could have taken this
