Q:

Whereas with the drug companies...

Lasker:

With the drug companies they don't care as long as they can sell it.

Q:

The element of profit...

Lasker:

Sure, the profit element is what makes the United States. (laughs) It's pathetic, isn't it?

Q:

Well, now, what about this Japanese doctor, Itakura? (at the city of Hope)

Lasker:

Well, Itakura has support from Japanese companies; and although we offered him support when we saw him in California this winter, he said he had enough support from Japanese companies. What in heaven's name he's doing, I don't know; but he's brilliant.

Q:

Where does he operate?

Lasker:

He works out of City of Hope in Los Angeles. He was the first person to clone any drug, and that was called somatostatin. It's a product of the hypothalamus. I must say he is brilliant.

Q:

That leads me to ask: is there anything more known about the efforts of the Japanese?
