time. It's going to be pretty bad.”
He said, “You'll have a rough time. I've come to tell you some dirt you're going to find right in your own department.” He did and it was true - there was dirt there.
I said, “Oh well, I'm going to have a bad time. I can see that. I suppose I'll get caught in this jam in one way or another.”
He said, “Oh, no you won't. If you follow my advice, and you've been all right so far, live so that you can always hold up your hands and say ‘Search me,’ and you'll never get into any real trouble. That was what was the matter with Sulzer.” He threw that right back as an example. “Sulzer had the right idea about not being bossed around, but when he started to rebel, he couldn't throw up his hands and say ‘Search me.’”
This was many years later. This was in 1933 that this police lieutenant told me that. The Sulzer episode had been thirty odd years earlier. But I had the same impression at the time and in fact I'm pretty sure it was correct. They had too much on him, which they never would have used if he hadn't rebelled. But it was the kind of thing which if the Citizens' Union, the city club, Samuel Seabury and other high-minded and politically-minded persons had had on him, would have ruined him before he ever began.
