friendly terms, as I was with the Sullivans. I was just on good terms with him. He grabbed me by the hand, he wrung it and he began to sort of gasp and said, “Oh, Miss Perkins. We've done a terrible thing!”

I said, “Senator?”

He said, “Oohh it's a dreadful thing. Oohh we're in a dreadful predicament.” He pulled his handkerchief out. He began to mop his face and then began to sob into his handkerchief, holding onto my hand all the time. He said, “Oh, that man. Oh, that man. He's so stubborn. Oh, we tried to save him. I tried to save him myself. All he's got to do is to just drop all this business. We don't want to impeach him. Nobody wants to ruin him. This is going to ruin him, ruin him forever! Oh, this is a terrible thing! Oh, it's a dreadful thing!” He sobbed.

I was saying, “Now, Senator Frawley, I'm sure it's terrible, but....”

“We had to do it. He wouldn't give us any way out. He just wouldn't agree. He wouldn't give us any way out. It's dreadful!”

He carried on frightfully and then he burst into a great sob as I was saying, “I'm so sorry. I'm sure it's hard for you. I'm sure it's hard for the Governor.” I was saying nothings, just to say something sympathetic.
