this impeachment proceeding. It had been going on for some time and I wasn't following it too closely. I didn't know what steps they took each day, although I could read it in the paper. I had been told how they didn't want to go through with it. Each one of them had said to me privately, “We've got something here. We ought not to be impeaching governors. It's a terrible thing to do.”
I came into the Capitol that day up the side steps from a side street that goes up on the south side of the Capitol. I forget what the name of it is. State Street is on the other side and this is on the south side. I came in that door. There was a special elevator right there that went to the executive office. It was the elevator you took if you were going to the Governor's office. Just as I came in, the elevator door opened and out stepped a group of men, some of whom stood in a knot around the door of the elevator speaking to each other. One or two others went in another direction. And one man, Senator Frawley, came walking down the corridor just as I came up the steps. There were all the marble pillars around like a forest. I said, “Good afternoon, Senator.”
