as to whether we were man and wife, we asked him to call a friend of ours in the vicinity. This friend, being irked at something, claimed that he had never heard of us. The man, whoever he is, who started that is a total liar. He made it up. That is absolutely apocryphal. No such thing ever happened. I wasn't keeping my own name for the sale of making a point of embarrassing the world. When I go to a hotel with my husband we always sign “Mr. and Mrs. Paul C. Wilson” on the register. We always have from the beginning. How ridiculous and absurd one would be not to do so.
Ruth Hale married Heywood Broun and Mrs. Ruth Shipley refused her a passports. She wouldn't give it to her in the name of Miss Ruth Hale. Although I sympathized with Ruth Hale and participated in the arguments with Mrs. Shipley from time to time, I never let any whim of my own stand in the way of my doing what I proposed to do, which was to so to Europe or anywhere else. I'm a conformist whatever else I am. I don't want to make any troubles about it. My mother always introduced me as Mrs. Wilson. All my mother's friends called me Mrs. Wilson. I don't care what they call me. I've had my professional name and it's been very useful to me. I certainly never allowed any embarrassing situation to arise.
