and it was a great asset.

Then there was another thing. The Mitchel administration was about to be when we were married. I suppose that my decision to keep my own name wasn't completely made at any one time. It just kind of drifted along. I made it definite quite a lot later. After my husband became a part of the Mitchel administration I had another very firm reason for it, which was that by using his name every time I made a wild speech in Buffalo about fire hazards in New York city it might be an embarrassment to the Mitchel administration. I would have had the feeling that I ought to shut up for fear of hurting him. But Miss Frances Perkins, rising in Buffalo, talking about the fire hazards in the City of new York, that didn't hurt anybody. Nobody knew and nobody realized that there was a personal connection. I didn't want to embarrass the mayor. The Mayor was doing everything that was possible of the regard to fire hazards and we made great improvements in the City of New York during his a administration.

I never ran into any embarrassing situation because of our separate names. There was a story going around that my husband and I registered at a small New England hotel under our separate names and when the clerk expressed doubt
