scene, who took any very serious obligation upon herself with regard to her husband's political life. Some of them were wonderful socially. Certainly Mrs. Nellie Tayloe Ross did take part when her husband was Governor of Wyoming. She was in fine style. There was the western pattern of the woman being a partner in the whole show. They knew her as well as they knew him. There was, of course, the wife of the Governor of Nebraska who invented Arbor Day. It was a lovely story of American life. Everyone plants a tree on Arbor Day. Nebraska was a treeless waste. She accomplished getting trees all over Nebraska. Practically every house has four or five trees around it, even the farmer. That woman was a wonderful character in American life. She had a great influence because she went all over the state. campaigning for Arbor Day and the planting of trees. She used her own fortune buying trees. I think she could have been elected Governor. She became very well known and very popular in the state.

But there was no real pattern for olive Mitchel to follow. However, she wasn't as polite, cordial and helpful as other people whose husbands had much lesser positions in the government. He adored her and she was very nice to him. She made no problems at all. The fact that she didn't go to a meeting or didn't want to sit on a platform was just
