the lawyers of these men thought that we two women would be the ones to do it.
I'll never forget it. It was it most terrible experience I ever had. I was getting dressed to go to the Church. It was a very pathetic call. They cried, wept, and carried on, The man meant no harm, he was a good husband and father. It was a dreadful test. I was all alone. There wasn't anybody in the apartment. There wasn't anybody whose advice to ask. I didn't even know that they had called Miss Goldmark. Finally one of the women said, “Well, we called Miss Goldmark and she says she will do it, if you will.” I didn't know whether she had or not, but at any rate it made it a worse decision. It was pretty dreadful.
I said finally that I would not. I came to that conclusion. I said that it was a public duty and that it was more important that this matter of conforming with the law that was intended for safety of individuals and the fixing of direct responsibility for the safety, health and welfare of the people who worked for him, was more important than the life and personal happiness of one individual. I must say that it was a terrible situation. I just hated it because I didn't have anybody to even talk it over with.
Because it was on my wedding day I remember it so
