plainly. I've always felt so sorry for that woman and that man. I finally had the grace after he had gone to prison to write him a letter, hoping he was fine, that there were some consolations in life. It was very disturbing and I remember that very plainly.
This legislation and these projects were in a position where they couldn't be dropped. It would have been just treachery to drop them. We just went away for a day or two for our wedding trip. The Mitchel campaign was on too and my husband couldn't go off either. The date was selected because we had to take a lease on the house beginning October 1. He had an apartment and I had an apartment. If we were going to get rid of them, we had to give up our leases on October 1 and had to sign the lease on the house as of October 1. It was obviously practical to get married in the last week in September. Otherwise we could have waited for a more convenient time, but it was the practical thing to do. We went away somewhere later.
We were going to go to Europe when the wretched European War broke out. We had passage on the Holland-American Line. We were going to be gone six months and have a nice time to ourselves. That had been the plan. That was off. But we had plenty of holidays and it really wasn't important.
