I remember asking Mrs. Leaf if she thought it was all right for me to go over and see these people. She said, “well, I think you have to go. You have to see them because they have the power to license.”

At any rate I got on very good terms with two or three of these men - the Commissioner of Public Safety who was a great, tall man with white hair and a long face, and another little short fellow who was head of the Bureau of Licenses. He was so much like the Tammany men I knew later that I've always connected them. He told me, “You know we and Tammany are just the same. We're Republicans. Over there they're Democrats. But we get together. We fix things up. We handle things for them. They handle things for us. Don't you ever worry, dear Miss Perkins, we'll take care of everything.” It was a wonderful experience.

When they saw that I was frightened they became kind of interested. The Irish are very charming about that. They'll help you out. This was the same kind of experience I had with Big Tim Sullivan, only it was earlier. They'll help you out. “You've been a good girl. You've done your duty. We'll see you through. So you want Sam Smith put out of business, do you?”

I said, “Well, we think it's the right thing to do
