what the Commission was about, what it was up to, when they would next meet. In other words, there was no diagram. I just thought it was gauche on his part, nothing else. I still think that was all it was. It was just gaucherie. He didn't realize that he should have.

I turned to the secretary, who was shaking in her shoes - she liked her job and thought she was going to be turned out - and said, “Will you tell me something about how this institution operates? Who's who? Who's the chief counsel now? Who's the principal lawyer? Who's the principal examiner? Who's the head of workmen's compensation now? Is Mr. William Archer still here?”

“Oh yes, yes, he's here.”

I said, “Of course I know Gernon and Havens well.”

“Do you?” she said. “That's fine.”

I said, “Yes. When does the Commission meet?”

“They don't have any regular may for meeting. They meet on call. Sometimes they meet every day and then they don't meet for a long time.”

“Are all the other Commissioners here today?”

“Mr. Lynch is never here on Mondays, but I think the others are here probably.”
