he appointed Mitchell of the miners and George F. Baer of the coal operators. My memory fails me, but it's all in the record, as to who were the other members of this Commission. I think there were five people on it.

That's all that remains of my memory of it when I think of John Mitchell. At the time that it happened in Theodore Roosevelt's administration I was certainly having no responsibility for these things at all. I was just the public and interested. Mitchell was then quite a young man and had conducted himself with great skill, dignity, intelligence and foresight. He had behaved beautifully. He had been mannerly throughout it all. Nobody provoked him to anger or the rough word, but he never let go of his main purpose. He never was diverted from it. He had shown strength and courage. This was before publicity was discovered as a technique you can utilize to put over your ideas. But he nevertheless made statements that were so clear and so simple that the newspapers did pick them up. They were repeated all over the United States and were effective in the thinking of the people. The miners were having a pretty rough time and there was no reason that they should starve to death half the time.
