various nations that are accredited to this country were invited. The Chief Consul of every nation who had a consular office in New York was invited, and of course every country has a consular office in New York. They came with their aides. That was something pretty fine. There was a great deal of foreign representation and we had to be pretty protocolish.

Then all the high dignitaries of the Roman Church and all the high dignitaries of the Episcopal Church came. Never before had the high dignitaries of the Roman Church been noticed in the State of New York for some reason or other. The State of New York is certainly not under the direction of the Episcopal Church, but for some reason or other it had been habitual, no matter what sect the Governor was, for the Episcopal Church to preside over anything that had to be presided over in the city of Albany and in the general affairs of the state. It was always the Bishop of Albany who invoked the divine blessing upon the opening session of the Legislature. It was always the Bishop of Albany who offered prayer at the inauguration of the Governor. It had always happened. When Hughes was Governor, I know that it was the Bishop of Albany who did the praying officially. Ever since the office was established the Bishop of Albany has always been a very distinguished person who carried a lot of weight. However,
