never turned up before 1928. He turned up preliminary to the '28 campaign, because he was all enthusiastic about it. He was from Baltimore, Maryland. He was, I think, of Hungarian extraction, but Roman Catholic and very devout. He, of course, had oodles of money. I don't remember now where he got it, but it's a matter of record. I had never heard of him, as a matter of fact, until he turned up as the angel of the pre-convention campaign for Al Smith. He didn't appear much personally. He was background. But money was coming from somewhere, and lots of it. I knew - I don't know that Mrs. Moskowitz told me, but somebody did - that a man named Raskob was crazy about Al Smith and was giving this.

Raskob's attraction to Al Smith was based on the fact that he (Raskob) was a devoted and warm-hearted Catholic who wanted to see a Catholic become President. It was kind of an ambition of his. He was not of Irish extraction. He was Hungarian, I'm sure. He was different, therefore, from all the other friends that Al had, or most of them. I don't know who else gave, but he was the great angel.

My impression is that Mrs. Moskowitz was the one who got him originally. It must be that she was planning for Al Smith to be President for quite a long time. She'd been dreaming the dream. She'd been looking around for ways and
