miss the Governor! What shall I do without him?” Yet there was a new Governor coming in whom he had also got to serve. The maids out in the cloakroom were crying. Mrs. Smith went out to get her coat before she left - the maids cried, she cried and you were sort of conscious that they hadn't sewed that all up and had it over. The personal relations still hung over.

Mrs. Smith left around five o'clock. I don't know where she went, because they didn't leave Albany right away. I don't know whether she came back for supper, but there was a supper served about half past six or seven to a few who had been told to stay for supper. That included the Governor and a few other people. Mrs. Moskowitz was there. I couldn't for the life of me say who else was there. It seemed sort of accidental. It was no protocol supper. I think we sat down at the table, but it was a sort of informal partly help yourself, partly passed supper. It was the kind of a supper that you would have anywhere after a big, all day reception had been going on. It wasn't roast beef and baked potatoes. It was something that could be served easily and quickly. I seem to remember that we did sit at the table, because I remember thinking how ugly the dining room was and wondering if anything could ever be done with it.
