as the head of the Department of Labor. I had said, “All right.” We had had our talk about that, what we would do, how we would handle things, what Al had said about it, and so forth. We'd had that talk at Hyde Park. We had outlined what we would go ahead with.

So it was several days before I saw him in Albany. I more or less had my program agreed upon, whether we were to fire anybody or not, who we would keep and who we would fire, how we would proceed. We had talked about all of that and I was engaged in getting my department in order, seeing everybody in the Department, making everybody comfortable.

I went to see Roosevelt two or three days after his inauguration. By this time, of course, Al had pulled out of the Executive Mansion. They had a room in one of the hotels in Albany. That was as far as they'd gone. They barely got there. They practically moved out the day the Roosevelts moved in. I think the Roosevelts came in the night before and they all stayed in the Executive Mansion that night - the Roosevelts as the guests of the Smiths. The next day the Smiths went to the hotel after inauguration. That's where I became conscious that their personal belongings hadn't all gone. Suitcases, clothes and other things were around that were theirs.
