leaving.” I was impressed by the fact that there was so much disorder in the station, that nobody seemed to know where anything was, that there was utter confusion. You couldn't get redcaps.

Anyhow, naturally we finally got a redcap, got a taxi, got through the crowd and to the Hotel Willard. Then I'd fully expected I'd get some messages. The only messages that I had were from Henry Bruere, my cousin and other people who we friends of mine and who I expected to see anyhow.

I then prepared to go to dinner. I said to Susanna, “Do you want to go to this thing at the pan American Union?” She said that if I didn't mind, She'd rather play with my cousin's boys. She'd rather do something amusing with them. So I said to Jack, “Will you go with me to the Pan American Union?”

He said, “Why certainly, I came down to be useful to you.”

Henry and Jane said they'd be damned if they were going to the Pan American Union. Jane said, “I think I would get parrot fever if I went there.” She was very scornful of it. Besides, of course, they hadn't been invited, and I had only two tickets. The evening wore along. I got my best dress on and my evening coat. Jack got his evening
