It all seemed pretty vague. Nobody got in contact with me to give me the assurance that I was to do this or that. After all, I had traveled and when I had traveled in foreign countries, going on mission that represented only the State of New York, I had always been properly met, properly presented, and everything fell in its place. Your opposite number was assigned to you and he saw you through everything you wanted to see, made everything available and easy, saw you to the railroad station. Everything was done nicely.

We got to Washington in the middle afternoon of Friday, the 3rd, and my first impression was of perfect bedlam in the railroad station. There were a fantastic number of people that were scurrying and running to catch trains and leaving Washington. There were a lot of others coming in too, but I remember that among the people that I saw running were Ogden Mills and Mrs. Mills. They were running to catch a train. I knew them and sort of waved to them. I didn't know whether they saw me or not. I learned later that she was the only one who was leaving. He was running because he was putting her on the train. I saw a number of other people who has been in the Hoover administration. I saw Arthur Ballantine and Mrs. Ballantine going. There were a great many other people leaving then. I remember saying to someone, “This must be the Republicans
