“You can bring your daughter - nobody else.” I said, “Where is St. John's Church, Mr. Early?” He seemed to be the first person I'd spoken to that seemed to be definite, know what he was about and have some plan in mind.

He said, “Why, you know where it is. Right on Lafayette Square.

I didn't know where Lafayette Square was, but I said, “All right,” thinking again that the taxicab man would know where it was.

I got up relatively early to get some coffee and rolls, and get myself and my child dressed. We were to go right from the church, Early had said, to the Capitol. I proceeded to get dressed and get breakfast. My cousin telephoned to say that he managed to get a seat on one of the stands for the inauguration. He asked if he could help me with Susanna. Susanna's seat was for an entirely different stand. So we agreed where to meet afterwards, or where they would try to meet Susanna afterwards. The whole morning was full of plans for little things. About twenty minutes of ten I went down to get a taxicab. There were no taxicabs to be had at the Willard Hotel. The doorman said, “No, there'll be no taxicabs here today. They're all being used.”
