I said, “How am I going to get to the church?” “What church do you want to go to?” he said. I said, “St. John's church on Lafayette square.” “Well, lady, you'll have to walk, “ he said. “I don't know where it is.”

He was very nice and told me just how to get there. It's quite a walk from the Willard Hotel, but not an impossible one. It's not that it's very far, but it's confusing to get to. The way Washington is laid out you never know if you're going in the right direction or not. It doesn't make any rhyme or reason to a newcomer. Cities aren't laid out that way. Washington is, and you're always getting lost. So we started to walk. It wasn't too far, but I was constantly asking my way to be sure I took the right turn.

We found it and went in. The church was filled in the front with people whom I recognized as being my prospective fellow Cabinet members and their wives, sons, daughters, or whatever else. We recognized each Other because our pictures had all been in the paper. I saw Claude Swanson. I knew him, because his picture had been in the paper. I saw Cordell Hull. His picture had been in the paper so I knew him. I knew Homer Cummings. I'd seen him before. He was going to be Attorney General.
