prayer is said. He had selected some suitable and appropriate ones - the prayer for our country, the prayer for social justice, the prayer for the president of the United states, the prayer of thanksgiving, which they use on Thanksgiving Day, and then a prayer of his own composition, which the Bishop had given him permission to read. In the Episcopal Church the clergy don't pray extemporaneously. If they want to have a special prayer, they have to submit it to the Bishop and if he gives them permission, they may say it. It was a very beautiful prayer. I've always kept it, because it was an exceptional prayer. He prayed for “Thy blessing upon Thy servant, Franklin,” It was very definite and prayed for him the way you pray for the dead, or the way you pray for a newly baptized child or adult, or the way you pray at a wedding, when you pray for “ Thy servants, John and Mary.” It was in a that tone. It was very good indeed and expressed what was in everybody's heart.

The hymns were good. It was then that one realized how much Roosevelt liked that hymn “Faith of our Fathers.” It was sung at that occasion. We also sang “oh God, our Help in Ages past.” We began the service with that. It was a very beautiful service, and very well done.

Then it was over. Interestingly, Roosevelt remained on his knees a considerable length of time after the clergy had retired. There is always a period of private prayer at
