The President had made a hasty decision on a temporary appointment of Homer Cummings as Attorney General after Senator Thomas Walsh died. Walsh had died on the way to Washington. I think that at the time Homer Cummings came in I didn't know the President had decided to appoint him. I seem to remember that I didn't know. It was before Oliver Hart had come. They conducted the ser ice which Endicott Peabody had composed and arranged. That doesn't mean it was a brand new service. It was the order of morning prayer, but he had selected, special psalms, special lessons and special hymns, which is appropriate for a special service.
