The President had made a hasty decision on a temporary appointment of Homer Cummings as Attorney General after Senator Thomas Walsh died. Walsh had died on the way to Washington. I think that at the time Homer Cummings came in I didn't know the President had decided to appoint him. I seem to remember that I didn't know. I saw Henry Wallace come in and I guessed who he was from his picture. I'm not too sure I saw him come in, as we all said our prayers and the service began.

The President and Mrs. Roosevelt and their family came in from the side door of St. John's Church. Instead of the principal door, they came in from the side door. Roosevelt couldn't walk far and that was a shorter walk from the door to the pew. Endicott Peabody and the rector of the church came in. I don't remember who the rector was. It was before Oliver Hart had come. They conducted the ser ice which Endicott Peabody had composed and arranged. That doesn't mean it was a brand new service. It was the order of morning prayer, but he had selected, special psalms, special lessons and special hymns, which is appropriate for a special service. All of the rest of it was standard morning prayer. He had selected from the Book of common prayer appropriate prayers to be said after the required prayers, after the prayers that have to be said whenever morning
