there. Perhaps you'll introduce me to the principal members of the staff and show me the general works of the place.”

“Well, yes,” he said, “I suppose so. When do you want to come?”

I said, “Well, suppose I come in half an hour. Would that be convenient for you?”

There was quite a pause in which I thought he was speaking to somebody else. Then he said, “Why yes, I guess that'll be all right. That's as good a time as any.”

It was then almost eleven o'clock before we went over. I did say to him, “I want to meet the members of the staff, if possible, and have a little visit with you.” So we went over. Miss Jay went with me.

We found the building all right. There was no one at the front door to meet me. That's one of the courtesies that you do show to people. We went in and up the steps. There was an elevator and an old man running it. I said I wanted to go to Mr. Doak's office. He said, “That's on the third floor.”

I said, “That's all right.”

He said, “Shall I take you up right away?”

I said, “Yes.”

He said, “I have to send your name up first. “ Apparently the rule had been that nobody could go to the third floor, which was Mr. Doak's floor, without sending their name up,
