work for him, got things together. Baruch fixed the policy, made the decisions and so forth.
I think Baruch had for many years been so rich and had so many interests that he always was working through other people. He preferred to be way back in the background, pull strings and have other people do the operating. He was always around conventions and for all I know he was at the '32 Chicago convention working in the background. But I don't know for sure.
At any rate, by the time the campaign had begun, which was a few weeks after the convention, Baruch was certainly being consulted about speeches, about the tour, and so on. I think probably from Baruch emanated all this vigorous and insistent emphasis upon balancing the budget, which Roosevelt certainly gave voice to throughout the campaign. I think that all that financial control stuff, putting the budget into balance, having an economy administration, bringing us out of the depression we were in by sound financial policies, sound commercial policies and so forth and so on, all came from Baruch. Baruch would certainly have been in accord with the general emphasis of Governor Roosevelt's campaign - that this was all being done for the welfare of the people, and all the people, and that he was going to pay attention to the people. That was all right.
