At any rate, we drove. I remember the chauffeur turning around to me and saying, “Where next?”
I would say, “Haines Point.”
The chauffeur would say, “We've just been there.”
I didn't know where we were. We went to Haines Point. We went to Rock Creek Park. If there was any other park to go to, I would have named it. I do remember poor Flor (the chauffeur) turning around and saying, “Where next?” and “I've just been there, Miss Perkins.” The chauffeur always remembered this episode, because, although the glass was closed between the chauffeur's seat and the back seat where I was sitting with Hugh, he was aware that something was going on. He said to me after that, “I guess General Johnson was having a bad time, wasn't he?” He didn't know what it was, but he knew there was a crisis in General Johnson's life.
At any rate, Johnson came through all right and he cooled off. He had at this time an office that had been made available to him in the Commerce Department. I don't remember whether at that time Roper had been told that he was to house the NRA or not. He certainly was told very promptly. Anyhow, Johnson was there, as were George Sloan, Nelson Slater, and one or two others who were volunteering on the job. It was just a little office. He had no secretary,
