a report on it. That's simple. That'll quell the riot for the moment. Then we'll decide what to do.”
“How am I going to study it?” she said.
“You'll have to get somebody to study it, that's all.
It's an economic question so you can hire yourselves an economist.”
She went and told Johnson that. He said what she suggested. Henderson, who's quite a fighter, loves to fight, and would rather fight than not, wasn't satisfied. He said that that wouldn't do, that the kind of agreement they were making in these codes was bound to destroy the American system, constitutional principles, and so on. It was like fascism, he said. I don't know if he was a flaming liberal, but he was a flaming something. He always flamed, and still does flame. That's his specialty. He's a very roughneck type. Everybody swung at Leon Henderson sooner or later, because he was doing plenty of swinging himself.
Anyhow, this was the strange thing that happened then, and this shows how Leon Henderson got into the government of the United States and became a national figure. Johnson said to him, “I'll have this studied by the Consumers' Committee.”
Henderson said, “What do they know about it? They're just under your thumb and under your control. This is nothing
