The carpenters have a horizontal union. We will all admit that people who build houses are carpenters, but they also know how to put up shelves, repair the walls, and do odd jobs. So you have carpenters working in a great variety of enterprises where the principal work is not building houses, or even building shelves and tables, but where the principal job is some thing else and there will be a few carpenters employed as repairmen, fix-it men, doing some kind of semi-carpentry work. But the carpenters' union claims that all those people belong to the carpenters' union.”
“And,” said one of the members present, “they jolly well do, General Johnson.”
“Well, they belong to the carpenters' union and even though there are only half a dozen of them working in a big electrical factory where they make electrical apparatus, or a half a dozen of them working in a big automobile factory where certainly carpentry is no great contribution to the object made, but is just a kind of a maintenance job, or half a dozen of them working in a boot and shoe factory, the carpenters claim all those people and they get just the same wage that the carpenter would get if he were building a house.”
The chorus of the Labor Committee was, “Sure they do. That's why they belong to the carpenters' union.”
