It hasn't been operated since the beginning of time and is a relatively late discovery. Those are the very high grade Pocahontas mines. They were one of the new fuels. Gas, natural gas, oil, coke, high grade smokeless coal, together with the utilization of electric power made from water, instead of coal, were all new fuels. You were now getting power by electricity instead of coal and were moving into an area where water power was a good competitor with coal as a producer of the electric power.

Calling on all that I had in my memory, I said, “I know, and you gentlemen surely know, that all of the experts testify that all of the water power is not as good nor as economical as coal production of electric power. Whereas water power is cheap in places where there is water power, it may fail. There always have to be supplementary step-up plants available which are fired by coal to provide the electricity for a great city even though there is water power that can be used a large part of the year.”
