details of the trip. I want your superintendent to take me around. I want to go to some of the houses. I want to take a look at the housing that the company provides. I want to see the wives of some of the steel workers. I want to call on them. I assure you that I know how to do that.”

They said, “Well, that's very private and delicate to go into people's houses.”

I said, “I assure you that I'm an experienced visitor and social worker. I won't give any offense to anybody. I promise you that. It will be just as nice as pie.”

He said, “I'm not sure the superintendent has ever been in any of the houses.”

“Well,” I said, “he doesn't need to go in if he thinks it will be resented. I'm sure that it won't be. Just tip off a few of the most reliable men that a call will be made. We'll just go into the area where they live and I promise you that I'll be invited into their houses. They'll invite me in. They're nice people. I know the kind of people they are. They'll ask me to come in. If we can get out with only drinking a pot of coffee, we'll do well. They'll be hospitable about it.”

Well, it was very painful for Mr. Taylor, but he finally said yes. I assured him that I was going to ask Mr. Grace, though I hadn't yet asked him. So they said I could go.
