“Oh,” he said, pulling his lips down.
So it was offered to her. I can't remember whether she took it or not. I think she did take it, and then resigned after a few months, then getting herself back into the Social Security in New York. She really wanted to stay in New York, but she wanted to come down here and mess in things too. She wanted to have a finger in the political pie and in the labor pie.
She came over to the office to see me the next day. I remember Miss Jay remarked on her extreme dressiness. She had already been written up because of her hats - this was during the war. She had a new hat on every week. They were very elaborate, and were obviously made at John Frederics, or some other place where they cost forty-five or fifty-five dollars apiece or more. Anybody could tell that they were that sort. They were not just a hat. They were very dressy, very noticeable, very becoming, very chic. She's very chic.
She came over to see me and I was glad to see her, of course. She said, “I wanted to tell you that I was very much touched when the President told me that you had suggested me for this post.”
I said, “Well, there's no reason why you should be. I suggested it on merit.”
“I know,” she said, “but you know very few women will be fair to other women. That was very fair of you towards me.”
