I said, “Oh now, Mrs. Rosenberg, nothing of the sort. I thought you would be interested in the job and we certainly must have people who are concerned with these matters,” and so forth. I tried to make her feel that I wasn't doing her any personal favor, and wanted her to know that I wasn't concerned about her.
At any rate, that's how she started her rise. How she has risen the rest of the way, I don't know, but I know how she got in. I saw her rise and it's an amazing story. I know that she tried to worm in on Truman the same way. She tried to come into the Truman outfit on the theory that she had some special studies to do.
Either Truman or Roosevelt, probably Roosevelt, put her on the board of the Veterans' Administration when old General Frank T. Hines was the head of it. He almost blew up and hit the ceiling over it. She tried the same business on him - telling him how to do everything, what the story was, and so on. I was on the same advisory committee. I saw what she was doing and saw him grit his teeth. He appealed to me, “Can't you get rid of that woman for me? Why do I have to have Mrs. Rosenberg?”
I said, “Well, you have to have me, General. I'm a woman.”
He said, “You're the Secretary of Labor. That's why
