An enormous number of people would also seek you out. So that by making contact with the Governor and political leaders of the state, without regard to their politics, with the political leaders of the Democratic party, I opened the door to myself for a great many people to see me whenever I went to a town. I had an enormous number of visitors - some people would say too many, but I have never been sorry that I did, because I became acquainted with the people of the United States in that way as I never could have in any other way. I never could have done it as successfully in any other way. I used to come back from these trips where I had made speeches and met people with just lists and lists and lists of names that I had written down. I think I still have those lists, because those people meant something to me. They were located by the towns they were in. I felt that for one reason or another we might need to know who they were sometime.
So when I went to Atlanta I knew that I was going into an area where I was none too popular and where I would need all the kudos I could get. That's why I made such a point of having the Governor properly welcome me and be glad to see me. I think the Governor introduced me at the meeting where I spoke.
