The only person I didn't see in my suite was the Governor. I just thought that he might be telling me too much about political ructions and political dissensions and political factions, and that that might be used harmfully against him, or used politically to further divide the Democrats.

There was a man named Jerry Connor, though I'm not too sure that that's the right name, who was a reasonably active fellow in Democratic party circles in San Francisco, or California. He was reasonably active. He wasn't terribly prominent, but he was around, knew people, was youngish. Several weeks later when I was back in Washington he came into my office and said to me, “Well, I understand you had an interesting time in San Francisco. I wish I'd been there. I heard you had a nice time.”

I said, “Yes, I had a very interesting time,” and so forth.

He said, “Well, I hear you're planning some new labor legislation.”

I said, “Yes, we have some plans for hours and wages legislation.”

“Well,” he said, “the man who told me this is one of the fellows in Giannini's outfit. He said that you
