She was pretty sure and thought it was very funny and wrote to me. Well, it was as much as a year after that before this Watsky thing began to circulate. So I know that somebody was digging around all through New England. I'm told by the town clerk of Newton that they searched the records of the City of Boston for something that might give some evidence that I was of Jewish extraction and then searched the records of all the towns surrounding Boston. They found this Paul Wilson marriage in Newton. That they pinned to and circulated. They had to prove I was a Jew. That was essential.

I think there was a big anti-Semitic movement going around in this country at that time. So it proved that I was a Jew and that if I were a Jew I was also a Red and if I were a Red I was protecting Bridges. That was what it was used for. That's how it comes into the Bridges story. They didn't start out to prove that I was protecting Bridges because they hadn't hoard of Bridges when they started to prove that anybody who had anything to do with Roosevelt was a Jew and a Red. Even in Teddy Roosevelt's day they tried to prove that his name wasn't Roosevelt, but Rosenfeld and that he was Jewish.

So these rumors that I was a Jew and a Red therefore started to be linked with rumors on the West Coast that
