he was a genealogist, and acted like one, went to call upon my sister, who was then living, and said that he had come to ask some questions about our family. My sister being interested in genealogy, the fact that your family came on the Mayflower and all that kind of thing, was perfectly glad to see him. He apologized to her for the cuestions that he was going to ask her, but said that he had been engaged professionally to trace the ancestry of her sister, and was I her sister, as it was reported. Yes, she said, I was her sister. He then wanted to ask were we the daughters of Frederick, were we the granddaughters of Edmond, was Edmond the son of Joseph, was Joseph the son of Edmond, was Edmond the son of They go back to Lemuel, to Thomas and to John who landed in Ipswich. Was that the line? Yes, said my sister, that was the line. She chatted on about it.

He went to inquire whether at any time any one of these people had married anyone who would be of Jewish extraction. My sister thought it was very funny. She laughed and thought it was just as funny as could be. He apologized for asking the question. She said, “Well, there wouldn't be any opportunity. There weren't any Jews in New England.”

“There might have been. Are you sure?”
