immigration cases, and knew therefore the decisions of the courts on cases that had gone to the courts on appeal, knew what was necessary to have in the record in order to satisfy the courts. Reilly thought that he was the best because he had the most experience in this field.
Shoemker was a very good man. He was not what I would call a first-class lawyer, but he was a specialist in immigration law. As a matter of fact, he was a man who had been an immigration inspector, had studied law at night, had only practised very briefly, had come back into the Department in a legal capacity. So whereas he wasn't as good a lawyer as some people were, he nevertheless was more experienced in this class of case, which is very complicated, than anybody that we could think of and lay our hands on. We might be able to get a great big lawyer, but he might not be able to handle it.
Well, we were in the midst of the preparation, and I think the date had not been set, but perhaps agreed upon, and Bonham had been informed that he should provide a place for it in Seattle. Of course, there was to be no publicity. Immigration hearings are habitually held without the attendance of anyone except the immigration officers, the alien, his witnesses and his lawyer.
