you've just spoken to is really something. I decided that it must be done. So I took them and answered them very truthfully and good humoredly, and politely. I decided that it was the best way to do it. So far as the individual asking the question was concerned, it never left anything but a good effect. Whereas if I had stormed and railed, I'm sure it would have left a bad effect, although the truth would have been exactly the thing that it always was.
But it was a tough situation. Of course, it was made tougher for me by the fact that a good many people who were friends of mine and associates of mine were so distressed about it that they could hardly bear what was going on. They would offer sympathy, aid, to circulate petitions, to get up and make speeches, etc. All of these I had to discourage because it would hurt you more than it would help you to have a lot of your personal friends running around with petitions, or passing resolutions in meetings, and so forth. Although, I may say, their offers of sympathy were almost more than I could bear, because I come of this old New England stock that can take anything except a kind word. Give me a kind word and my emotions come right out of the eyes. But so long as it's nothing but attack I can keep it all under
