raised by the vestal virgins, “Shall we let the lions on this man? Shall we kill him? Shall we turn the gladiators on these women?” The crowd would scream, “Let the lions out!” You felt almost as it that was happening, “Let the lions out!” You felt almost as it that was happening, as if some element of justice, unseen, invisible, would say to the crowd, “Shall we ruin this woman? Or shall we save her? Shall we give her a just evaluation? Or shall we castigate her, call her names?” They would scream, “Ruin her!” You couldn't help the feeling that you were in that position, but you said, “What if they do ruin me? I'll do what I have to do.” You do what is your duty to do and then act as though nothing has happened, as grandmother said.
Well, it was a very tough, but a very great experience for me, as a matter of fact. It was during these two years that I formed the habit of going to church every morning, because it was an easier way to adjust myself to the painful realities of life, and to assure myself of the help and support of God, which I knew I had if I was doing the right thing; it was an easier way for me to get it into my personal recollection and into the forefront of my mind, than otherwise.
