ourselves, that integrity would have scattered, and I would not have had that inner come within myself which makes it possible for me to rely upon myself under the guidance of God to do the right thing and make the right decision and take the consequence. It makes it possible for me to rely upon myself to do what has to be done without regard to its effect on me, its effect on me on the outside, effect on my reputation, my position, and so on. That's the one thing you have to steel yourself to if you're in public office. You have to find out how to make decisions that are right and just, in conformity with law, in conformity with humanity, not sheltering yourself from what you know or assume will be accusations and persecution even. It's not the easiest thing to do, I may say.

I never realized how hard it was to do those things, because I have the temperament to do them. That is, my intention is to do the thing that is of integrity. I don't think I ever realized the strength of the temptation to shield oneself until I saw other persons also under attack, and realized how terrific the attack on me was when Id id not give way to the voice of the mob. Of course, one could not but think of the crowd in the Roman arena when the martyre were let out and the question would be
