committee that had the impeachment in hand was made to dismiss the impeachment, it having been in the papers that morning, a luncheon was scheduled. When I came into the room the whole outfit rose up and cheered. Grown men cried. Tears were rolling down Bill McComb's eyes. These people weren't in the Immigration Service at all. They were just scattered through the Department, but the strain they had been under was sort of shown by the expression of affection, and its emotional demonstration, for just a few moments. We all congratulated each other, and, of course, it was my duty to comfort the little dears, give strength so that they wouldn't feel that it had been too bad, putting them on the track of rejoicing that this was over and that all was well.
One felt great support, also, all through the government. I don't want you to think for one moment that I didn't. The President never mentioned the matter to me, nor I to him. That was right. I suppose that it would have killed me if he had. I don't know that my morale would have endured having a sympathetic word said. Possibly it would have. At any rate, there was enough New England in the Delano outfit of his blood to make him fully understand this situation. New Englanders don't talk about their problems to each other.
