superior job. They invented what they called “the Toledo system.” And I believe that it carries on to this day (1953) under that name. The Blade sees that the name is never lost.

It was a system of a local committee, appointed locally and built up locally, which would have the effect of placating any disgruntled elements, and making adjustments between employers and workers locally before it got to be a big strike. At any rate, after some other ruction they all accepted that and it served to make a settlement of the situation for the time being.

The committee also recommended to me that I appoint sombody from the outside to mediate. I appointed Charles P. Taft. Taft came back and told me the same thing - that there was an infiltration there and that you couldn't settle anything on that account. Taft was very good indeed in making it appear a very formidable process that you had to go through to have a hearing before him He was successful in immediately getting the public utility workers back to work, and all the other factories except Auto-Lite. The enthusiasm gradually disappeared among the real Auto-Lite workers. All of a sudden the outsiders disappeared. Nobody ever did know what became of them,
