best points in his party's program. The President's speaking was very eloquent toward the end. He made some very good speeches and some excellent speeches over the radio. I thought he was very appealing.

Of course, everybody knew about the week spot in Willkie's personal life. It could easily have been put in circulation and it would have been very detrimental to him. He had a lady friend in New York. That was very well-known. She was really a woman of great brains end intelligence. It was alleged that she wrote his best speeches for him, and I think she did. She's a very able person and comes of a very able family. It was discussed in high political circles as to whether to let it out or not. This impressed me very much, because it was discussed, but the President said, “No, no, I don't think so, Frank Walker says those things always boomerang. They're not so hot after all. Some of the Republicans may let it out because some of them are very made about it. They didn't hear about it before the nomination and should have heard if there was anything queer.” At any rate, the decision was that the Democrats wouldn't let it out, wouldn't put it into circulation.
