the union what the union wanted. However, there was usually some gain for the union. Hillman certainlydid his very best with moral suasion and influence, bringing in all that he had in the way of organizing skill, - there were even those who said he brought in some of the roughnecks who had organized for the garment workers to show the light of day to some of the other unions - to round up the other unions on the side of the government and the board.

I don't know if it's true, but there were some who said that he used some of his roughnecks to help in the settlement of the Auto-Lite case. There were cases, as I've mentioned, when Hillman called up certain employers and promised them certain things if theywould sign up with this union. Hillman didn't have anything to do withthe Defense Mediation Board, but he certainly ran the Office of War Mobilization that gave out the contracts. There was a strike, for instance, on the Pacific Coast. Hillman wanted it settled that day. He wanted the men who were out to go back to work. He talked to one or two of what he regarded to be the leaders of the strike. The strike was not under the auspices of the AF of L which had the union there.
