was no wharf, you know - no dock - just on the wild shore. He waded ashore and hunted up Darlan. It was the most romantic tale! I hope to goodness Julius Holmes has written his memoirs.

The last time I saw Julius Holmes, he was all dressed up in fine paraphernalia. I was dining with Lucretia Bori in New York - you know, the opera singer. She had a little dinner party, and we were going somewhere afterwards, I don't remember where - theatre, opera, concert, something. Among other guests was General Hugh Drumm, who was the commanding officer at Governor's Island, and Julius Holmes was his aide. The last time I had seen Julius was when he appeared at that party, waiting out in the hall, and sent in a message to General Drumm which General Drumm read, and rose from the table and said to Lucretia, “I beg your pardon, but I must go at once. I must go at once.”

We were all ready to go. The party broke up, and I went out into the hall and there was Julius Holmes standing, all dressed up in the most elaborate kind of military dress uniform - but with a look on his face as if he'd seen a ghost.
