I remember when Lauchlin Currie was sent out to China. I don't remember too much about it. I just remember that we somehow were made aware of it. I don't remember that the President said so, but somebody spoke of it. “What's he going to do?”

“He's going to try and get some further agreements about tung oil,” they would say.

It was one of those situations.

Was Lauchlin Currie all right?

I could never see that he wasn't. I mean, I was astonished when any accusations were made about him. I don't know. Ten years ago, I would have said he was absolutely all right. My first instinct would have been that he was absolutely all right. I never know what's meant by these accusations. I haven't a doubt that he spoke to somebody that now is regarded as naughty-naughty, but I certainly never saw anything in him or in his advice or in his method of operation that was the least bit out of the pattern of an American citizen doing the best he could. I think he, too, was born in China, wasn't he? Yes, I'm pretty sure. I think he too was a
